Risk Factors5

Most H. pylori bacteria are acquired during childhood and persist throughout life, if left untreated. The highest infection rates (3-10%) are known to occur in developing countries. H. pylori transmission is more likely to happen within families and can possibly occur when the bacterium passes through vomit or stool.

Some other risk factors include:
  • Smoking
  • 50 years of age or older
